Every other Thursday, Bernard attends a Solidarity Service during which ‘Orgy Porgy’ is chanted. In this lesson, we will learn more about ‘Orgy Porgy’ in ‘Brave New World’ by Aldous Huxley.

Solidarity Service

A solidarity service mimics a traditional church service, but promotes the conditioning goals of the World State by encouraging unity in lieu of individuality. Orgy-porgy is a summons of a higher power, Henry Ford, who started the mass production that led to people production, that takes place during a solidarity service. In this lesson, we will learn more about orgy-porgy in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun,

Kiss the girls and make them One.

Boys at One with girls at peace;

Orgy-porgy gives release

The circle of twelve alternating girls and boys prepare themselves to momentarily lose their unique identities and join together as one unified existence. Similar to the socialization that takes place during night time conditioning, chants and rituals are used to control individual sexual responses in a spiritual way.

Soma

With the beating of the drum and a T-sign made by the president of the group, the meeting begins. Flavored soma, cocaine, and morphine are passed around like a Holy Communion as each member of the group takes a sip while saying, ‘I drink to my annihilation.’ After singing the first hymn, the cup is passed again as each states, ‘I drink to the Greater Being.’ After the second hymn, ‘I drink to the imminence of His Coming,’ is repeated by each person in the circle as the cup is passed a third time. After the third hymn, all are feeling the effect of the soma. Soma as part of a religious ceremony, shows the degree to which the World State will go to make people think that they are happy. As long as they are feeling good and having fun, it doesn’t occur to them that they have submitted to the World State without any freedom of thought.

The Orgy

As a voice on the loud speaker says, ‘Oh, Ford, Ford, Ford,’ each of the members is moved to tears. When each has jumped up and claimed to hear Ford coming, they all jump up and dance while slapping the backside of the person in front of them to the beat of the accelerating music. It is time to summon the Higher Being with the chanting of ‘Orgy-porgy.’ Finally, the circle breaks onto a ring of couches where the twelve succumb to an orgy in honor of their unity. ‘Wasn’t it simply wonderful?’ She (Fifi) looked at Bernard with an expression of rapture, but of rapture in which there was no trace of agitation or excitement – for to be excited is still to be unsatisfied. The combination of drugs, music, and uninhibited group sex leave them feeling temporarily satiated, but once the initial release passes, Bernard feels more isolated than he did before. Is he the only one that doesn’t hear Ford coming? All he can think about is the unattractive girl he just had sex with.

Lesson Summary

Orgy-porgy is a chant that is repeated as part of a solidarity circle after the drinking of soma, but before group sex. The solidarity circle is an allegory for religion, but one that promotes loss of self in favor of a group identity. The use of sex, drugs, and music to stimulate an emotional release in a controlled way prohibits the individuals in the group from making choices that could potentially oppose the conditioned response endorsed by the World State.
